MedImmune is an innovation leader among biotechnology companies. We seek to leverage intellectual property and state-of-the-art technologies as we develop the biological products in our rich pipeline.

Research & Development

Discovery, research optimization, and process development are among the founding strengths of MedImmune. We take great pride in our entrepreneurial spirit and our unwavering commitment to the development of new biologics that hold tremendous potential for patients around the globe.

Locations for MedImmune R&D facilities include:

  • Gaithersburg, MD
  • Mountain View, CA
  • Santa Clara, CA
  • Hayward, CA
  • Cambridge, UK

In 2008 MedImmune unveiled the Aaron Klug Building, a new research and development facility in the heart of the UK's Cambridge bioscience community. This new 92,000-square-foot building is named after the winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. It consists of two state-of-the-art laboratories, expanding capacity for the number of drugs that can be developed each year in our Cambridge location.

Manufacturing

From commercial-scale manufacturing of our marketed products, to the production of clinical trial materials for our advancing pipeline of products, MedImmune is an industry leader in manufacturing monoclonal antibodies and live viral vaccines.

Locations for MedImmune manufacturing facilities include:

  • Frederick, MD

Since 1999, the Frederick Manufacturing Center (FMC) in Maryland, U.S., has been producing the monoclonal antibody (MAb) Synagis® (palivizumab). As demand for the product has grown over the years, we have also partnered with Boehringer Ingleheim in Germany to produce Synagis. The FMC expansion project, currently underway, will increase MedImmune's internal manufacturing capacity for both our RSV MAbs and future marketed monoclonal antibodies.

  • Philadelphia, PA

The master seed material for FluMist® (Influenza Vaccine Live, Intranasal) is initially produced in Mountain View, CA, which is shipped to Speke, UK for bulk manufacturing and then shipped to our Philadelphia facility in the United States for blending and packaging. Distribution of the finished vaccine is then handled by our state-of-the-art facility in Louisville, KY.

  • Bensalem, PA

Bensalem, PA is the location of a warehouse for FluMist® (Influenza Vaccine Live, Intranasal).

  • Louisville, KY

Louisville, KY is the location of one of MedImmune's distribution centers.

  • Speke, UK

In 2006, MedImmune began conducting its bulk-manufacturing process for FluMist® (Influenza Vaccine Live, Intranasal) in a new purpose-built, state-of-the-art influenza vaccine manufacturing facility in Speke, UK. The egg-based process can produce up to 50 million monovalent vaccine doses per 12-month cycle.

  • Nijmegen, Netherlands

The Nijmegen Manufacturing Facility, located about two hours from Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, produces MedImmune's Ethyol® (amifostine). In 2008, a major renovation of the Nijmegen facility culminated in the official opening of a new clean room designed to meet our growing demands for large-scale manufacturing of commercial and clinical trial materials.
